The Riverwest Food Pantry improves the social, nutritional, and financial vitality of communities through hunger relief. Born in late 1970s from the East Side Housing Action Committee (ESHAC), the Riverwest Food Pantry has been operating out of St. Casimir church (924 E. Clarke St.) and Gaenslen Milwaukee Public School (1250 E. Burleigh St.) for decades. In 2013, the Riverwest Food Pantry became a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit to relieve hunger, but also to be a primary offensive against intractable poverty. We expanded our mission to "come together around food to relieve hunger, improve lives and grow community well-being.”
Together, volunteers and shoppers alike, we can become a community of generosity – a community well-nourished, well-informed and strengthened to prevail. In these uncertain times, the Riverwest Food Pantry remains dedicated to working hard for the well-being of our community. We are all struggling and grieving in one way or another from this past year of drastic changes in our lives. It takes sacrifice and strength to share in the burdens of our neighbors and the greater community. But it also increases our joys and reminds us that we are not alone—we belong to one another. Together we can sustain so much more.
